The phototherapy method consists in the fact that the skin of a completely undressed baby (only in a diaper) is illuminated almost constantly for several days with a special installation. When exposed to light, bilirubin turns into a non-toxic substance, which is eliminated from the body after a few hours. After this treatment, all signs of jaundice disappear without a trace.
The lamp is used while the child is sleeping, after covering her eyes with a blindfold or special glasses to protect them from exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
The lamp is placed above the head or on the side back of the crib, placing it at a distance of about 50-60 cm from the newborn.
The traditional treatment regimen suggests that every 2:00 it is necessary to take a break from the procedure for feeding (breastfeeding is very important and helps reduce bilirubin by 10-20%) and breaks for other needs of the child. However, it may vary depending on the severity of the condition and the individual characteristics of the baby.
Every hour the child is under the lamp, it is necessary to change the position of her body - on her back, on her stomach, on her side.
It should be remembered that during phototherapy, the daily volume of fluid required for a child should exceed the physiological need by 10-20% (in children with extremely low body weight - by 40%).
The criterion for the effectiveness of the treatment is a blood test to determine the level of bilirubin in the blood of the newborn.
